Kempower, a global leader in DC fast-charging solutions, has opened a new research unit on LUT University’s campus in Lappeenranta, Finland. The unit aims to boost innovation in electric vehicle (EV) charging technology and advance the future of electric mobility through the Electric Mobility Research Center (EMRC), founded in 2023.

The EMRC team currently includes six LUT researchers and two from Kempower, with more specialists to be added for projects such as the HETE (Heavy Electric Traffic Ecosystem) program and studies related to future aviation. The new facility will also create opportunities for doctoral candidates, thesis students, and trainees.

“Collaboration between industry and academia accelerates the translation of breakthrough research into scalable real-world solutions. Kempower’s partnership with LUT University to establish and scale the Electric Mobility Research Center is playing a key role in accelerating the transition to electric mobility. We are excited to take this partnership to the next level by establishing a new research unit on the Lappeenranta campus,” said Kempower’s CEO, Bhasker Kaushal.

“Our most important task is, no more and no less, to save the world. In this work, we need outstanding companies such as Kempower by our side,” said Juha-Matti Saksa, Rector of LUT University. “At LUT, we solve global challenges through science and education, and we provide companies with the expertise of top specialists as well as the skills and potential of our students to support their success.

“Kempower and LUT University have been partners since 2023, when we started the Electric Mobility Research Center, EMRC. LUT’s campus is an excellent location to have our researchers around the same desk in Lappeenranta. This will also strengthen the regional technology ecosystem and research cooperation between Lappeenranta and Lahti, where EMRC has been working as a central part of the Green Electrification of Mobility Cluster,” added Ville Naumanen, Research Director and EMRC lead.

This initiative strengthens Kempower’s global academic collaborations, which also include Tampere University in Finland, the FREEDM Systems Center at NC State in the U.S., and the Technical University of Denmark.
