Finnish samart mobility expertise is delivering tangible results in complex urban transport systems.
Sitowise subsidiary Infracontrol has been awarded a 10‑year contract by the City of Gothenburg to maintain and further develop signal safety and control systems for the city’s tramway infrastructure.

The contract covers preventive and corrective maintenance as well as continuous development of functionality for Gothenburg’s tram traffic control and monitoring systems, which are a critical part of the city’s public transport network. The procurement was awarded based on price and technical competence, with Infracontrol’s long‑standing experience in PLC‑ and SCADA‑based signal safety solutions playing a key role in the decision.

Proven technology supporting safe and efficient urban rail

Infracontrol’s control and monitoring system has been in continuous operation in Gothenburg since 1996, forming a central part of the city’s tramway traffic management. The system provides traffic controllers and maintenance personnel with a clear and user‑friendly interface to manage signals, switches, switch heating and related safety‑critical functions across the network.

The solution includes:

  • graphical user interfaces for real‑time control and monitoring
  • smart logging and replay functionality to support incident analysis
  • integration with traffic planning systems for vehicle identification and routing
  • red‑light violation detection to improve traffic safety

Beyond tramway operations, the system also supports station and building automation, enabling the control of doors, escalators and elevators, further enhancing accessibility and operational reliability in public transport environments.

Relevant lessons for cities and authorities internationally

The Gothenburg case demonstrates how long‑term, data‑driven and safety‑critical ITS solutions can support the reliability and resilience of urban rail systems in large cities. It highlights the Finnish approach to intelligent transport: systems that are interoperable, modular and continuously developed in close cooperation with public authorities.

Such solutions are increasingly relevant for cities seeking to:

  • improve public transport reliability and safety
  • modernise legacy signal and control systems
  • ensure long‑term lifecycle management of critical infrastructure
