Finnish company Donut Lab sent shockwaves through the world of sustainable transport at the CES tech trade show by announcing it has developed a solid-state battery. Solid-state batteries have long been the desired “game-changer” of the battery industry, enabling faster charging, longer lifespans, and superior performance in cold conditions.
Donut Lab is a technology company with Finnish roots but headquartered in Estonia, primarily operating in the electric mobility sector. It has previously launched, among other things, a product line of electric vehicles consisting of compatible components. Donut Lab belongs to the same corporate family as the electric motorcycle manufacturer Verge Motorcycles.
A new breakthrough in battery technology announced at CES could solve many of the challenges facing the electric transition in transportation. Solid-state batteries can withstand several times the number of charging cycles, perform better in cold conditions, and charge in just minutes. In an interview with Helsingin Sanomat, Donut Lab CEO Marko Lehtimäki states that the new battery, called Donut Battery, would also be cheaper than current lithium-ion batteries and that Donut Lab, together with its partners, has the capability to scale up battery production.
The electric mobility world has received Donut Lab’s news with a hint of skepticism. At this stage, Donut Lab has yet to present a prototype, research, or patent applications to support its claims. However, the company asserts that it will soon be able to deliver electric motorcycle models equipped with the new battery, so they will have to show their hand shortly.
